Chinese Glove
and Shadow Puppet Exhibition

Glove puppets, string puppets, shadow puppets or actors' theatre, all these art forms have always reciprocally influenced each other, and have drawn on the same sources.

This holds true as much for costumes, makeup, movement as repertory.

It is thought that the puppet theatre is the common crucible for theatre arts in China.

It seems actors were inspired by it, and this influence is traceable in theatre vocabulary : an actor exiting a scene says he's going to "hang himself up" - just as one hangs up a puppet - and it is also true that actors call a puppet manipulator "Master", while the reverse does not happen.

While we are not able to clearly define the role of each genre in the evolution of the other, reciprocal influences are also numerous.
